Daughter of the Yellow River The Story of One Chinese Woman and Her Century
A 52 minute documentary
Written and directed by Barbara Necek
This documentary tells the novelesque story of the French-Chinese pianist, Chow Ching Lie (known to her friends as “Julie”), who is renowned in France as the author of the autobiographical work “Journey in Tears”( « Le Palanquin des Larmes »).
Born in the 1930s in China, while it was still ruined by the Sino-Japanese War, and forced into marriage at the age of 13, she started from nothing to become a coveted pianist, invited to state dinners by French presidents.
Through the incredible journey of this one, remarkable woman, we will travel through the upheavals in the recent history of China: the rise of Mao, the Cultural Revolution, and of course, the economic miracle that started in the 1980s. We will discover just how these events have shaped the unique life of this artist, writer and businesswoman whose roots are found in both French and Chinese culture.
